The idea that certain sounds might be perceived quite differently in different geographic re-gions appears so unlikely as to form the basis of a joke. Yet this article concerns a sound pattern that, it strongly appears, is indeed heard differently by people in different geographic regions. I explore the properties of this pattern and the basis for this curious geographic association.
