The use of animals for material or immaterial purposes is as old as mankind but a very complex subject. In Part I it is reviewed against the historical background of man-animal relationships in the widest sense, the taming and domestication of wild animals, the evolution of hunting and of land tenure systems and alternative uses of natural resources, but also in relation to the changing demands and preferences for products from wild animals, cultural perceptions and the recreational needs of the modern society. For thousands of years the use of wildlife was empirical and therefore haphazard. Only with the development of the natural sciences, biology and most recently ecology, has man started to understand the underlying natural processes and biological productivity. This should enable him to transform his use of wildlife resources into a scientifically planned management activity with the ultimate goal of maintaining all the earth’s living resources for continued sustainable benefit to mankind. To this end it is becoming increasingly important to apply also the emerging knowledge and principles from other scientific disciplines, such as economics.
