Spermatogenesis in F1 hybrids between A and B races was studied. The A [female] X B [male] hybrid [male][male] have testes of normal size, without functional spermatozoa. The spermatogonia and 1st spermatocytes appear normal; at diakinesis some of the chromosomes are not paired. Bivalents vary from 0 to 4 (4 being the complete pairing), depending upon the "strength" of the races used. The spindle of the 1st meiotic division elongates enormously and bends into a ring. The cell body fails to divide. The 2nd division is absent. Binucleate spermatids are formed; they elongate and give rise to worm-like spermatozoa that degenerate. The testes of the B [female]X A [male] hybrid [male][male] are small. At diakinesis very few or no bivalents are observed. The 1st meiotic division is frequently multipolar. The univalents (-diads) are distributed at random to the poles, and undergo a splitting either at telophase or during the ensuing interphase. The 2nd division is absent. The spermatids formed contain from a single to many nuclei with a variable number of chromosomes. These spermatids degenerate. The significance of these findings for the theories of the mechanism of mitosis and of hybrid sterility is discussed. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: T. Dobzhansky
