A theoretical analysis of the responses of the respiratory system to CO2 inhalation was made. The physiological system was treated as a feed-back regulator designed to control the level of tissue CO2 concentration. Equations were derived to define the performance of the controlled and controlling components of the system, and these were then combined into closed-loop equations descriptive of the operating regulator. The equations of the controlled component (lung-blood-tissue CO2 exchanger) were linear, second order differential equations defining the behavior of tissue and of arterial CO2 concentrations. Control of this system was accomplished by feedback through parameters, so that the closed-loop equations were nonlinear. Particular solutions of these nonlinear equations, using various values for the basic system properties, were obtained with the aid of an analogue computor. These solutions yielded predictions for the behavior of ventilation and arterial PCO2 which were in substantial agreement with the observed responses of the physiological prototype.
