IN spite of an extensive literature1,2little is known about the way in which insects defend themselves against bacteria. Antibodies have not been found in animals more primitive than certain species of fish3,4and organ transplantation is possible in larvae of several species of Lepidoptera5unopposed by defensive systems such as found in vertebrates.
