The existence of 2 freshwater forms of A. gambiae which, when crossed, produce sterile F1 males has already been established. Now the Tanga salt-water form and the A. melas from Liberia have been crossed with each other and with the 2 fresh-water forms. Tables enumerate these crosses and the results. It would seem that A. gambiae is a complex of at least 4 partially incompatible forms. Whether any or all deserve rank as separate species is not yet clear.
