In otological examinations of cases of braiii aflect ion the acoustic function has often been too~ nw: h neglected. We geiieral-ly find some but slightly substantiated reports of the existence of tieble-deafness even when there in some cdses is mention also of ba ss-deafness.I1 is a general rule by impaired perception, by which is understood il lesion of labyrinth, nerve or medullar nuclei, that the treble become8 involved, whilst in diseases affecting sound-cwnduction it is the bass that suffers. It now sppeiirs-not least fro111 oiir own investigationsthat in the majority of labyrinthine affections it is, however, not the treble, but the bass which prefcrably siiffem. This, we think, is caused by an increased intralabyrin thine pressure esisting in these cases. The fenestrs thus become fixed, just as they do for instance by an otitis media with an exsudate in the middle ear. 111 both cases we have in reality to do with an affection of sound conduction and consequently the result is a bass-deafness. In real affections of perception we have on the contrary a distinct trebledeafness as we know we find it in senile atrophy and syphilitic neuritis; the latter especially is, however, but ramly a pure affection of perception, and therefore often also exhibits a bass deafness.
