The arguments of the book are acute, the treatment sophisticated and subtle, the project imaginative and the author thoroughly at home with his literature. His weak spot seems to me his philosophy of mind. No defence or even detail is offered of the physicalist interpretation of belief, which is the underlying assumption of the whole book; no very plausible case is made out against the view that “fine-grained beliefs” presuppose language; the introduction of intention is not very adequately defended; and the notion of desire is hardly examined at all.
