In surveys in Kenya and Tanzania in 1984-86 the authors noted that endemicity of Burkitt's lymphoma coincided with profusion ofEuphorbia tirucalli.Extracts of the stalks and leaves of the plant strikingly induced Epstein-Barr virus early antigen in Raji cells harbouring latent EBV genome. Viral capsid antigen synthesis was also induced. Further, they enhanced EBV-induced transformation of lymphocytes. Extracts of soil, vegetables and reservoir drinking water taken from sites where the plant grew had similar effects. The active principal was identified as a 4-deoxyphorbol ester with activity similar to a potent tumour promoter. The plant is used daily in the Lake Victoria Basin region as a herbal medicine and as the leaves are eaten by goats the compound may enter the food chain. The authors suggest that the EBV-enhancing effect is more clearly manifest when malaria lowers EBV-specific cellular immunity.newline˜D.W. FitzSimons
