Tested 6 male albino holtzman rats with saccharin and liquid food in 60-min daily sessions. Ss initially showed a greater intake/lick for saccharin than liquid food. Continued licking led to satiation on saccharin, but not food, and 2 distinct patterns of microbehavioral adjustment. Food drinking led to a decrease in lick duration (sec/lick), an increase in lick intake (ml/lick), and an increase in intake/sec of contact with the drinking tube (ml/sec). Saccharin drinking revealed a major departure from this pattern. There was no significant change in sec/lick. The differences appeared to proceed from oral stimulation due to differential viscosity rather than postingestive consequence. Poor correspondence between sec/lick and ml/lick indicates new technical requirements for further study of microbehavioral regulation.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
