Perceptions of caring for cognitively impaired spouses were explored in a sample of 15 elderly spouses. Male and female spouses differed in the way they perceived dimensions of control as reflected in interpretation of the disease process, assumption of authority, control over the environment, and use of social support. Suggested by the findings is high reliance on previous patterns of sex-role behavior.
