Effects of aureomycin on the agent of feline pneumonitis grown in the yolk sacs of chick embryos were studied in the belief that the greater effectiveness of aureomycin over penicillin would be reflected in its influence on the biology of the virus. Aureomycin in concns. of 0.025 to 0.25 mg. significantly prolonged the life of the chick embryos. The delay of death was directly proportional to the amt. given, indicating that in the chick embryo the antibiotic was destroyed at a constant rate. The effect of aureomycin was markedly independent of virus concn. (from 10 to 100,000 Ld50) and time of admn. The antibiotic was effective up to 24 hrs. before the expected death of the embryos. Under the influence of the antibiotic, initial body division was prevented and growth was greatly retarded. The granules making up the clusters and vesicles slowly enlarged and eventually became small plaques. Aureomycin appeared to be a more powerful inhibitor of the activity of feline pneumonitis virus than penicillin. Because of its ability to prevent growth as well as initial body division, it was effective even when a large no. of host cells were invaded.
