2. Young male Holtzman rats were fed on a synthetic 27% protein diet, 4 rats, or a protein-free diet, 8 rats for 45 days; 5 rats were forcibly fed with the protein diet and 8 with the protein-free diet for 10 to 20 days. The protein-deprived rats lost weight and became weaker, the small intestine was thin, small in diameter and short, the jejunal muscle was fairly normal but the ileal muscle atrophied. Bodyweight, mucosal weight, mucosal protein concentration and total mucosal protein were lower in rats deprived of protein for 45 days than in controls. Disaccharidase activities were not significantly different between the 2 groups but sucrase activity in segment 3 of the intestine was greater in deprived than on control rats. The total activity of each disaccharidase in whole intestine of deprived rats decreased but when calculated per 100 g bodyweight it was similar in both groups. Weight loss in the protein-deficient group did not decrease with forced feeding and the mucosal weight decreased significantly. At 20 days the bodyweight of deprived forcibly fed rats was 44% that of controls and mucosal weight was 64% that of controls; there were no consistent differences in disaccharidase activities. P. W.
