The total measured alpha emission from a thick layer of powdered sample of each of a number of minerals and rocks of known uranium and thorium content agreed well with the emission predicted for the samples on the basis of a source absorption proportional to the square root of the atomic weight of the elements comprising the source. Thus, the measurement of combined uranium and thorium in most minerals and rocks may be made by the simple count of alpha rays above a thick layer of the sample, and the application of the appropriate absorption factor. Counting equipment particularly suitable for the range of activity of common rocks is described which will count all of the alphas emitted above the plane of the source having a residual range greater than a specified amount, thus requiring no calibration.
