PACAP is a novel neuropeptide that was originally isolated from ovine hypothalamus on the basis of its ability to stimulate the production of CAMP in cultured pituitary cells.'Two forms, with 38 (PACAP-38) and 27 (PACAP-27) amino acid residues, respectively, are derived from a precursor of 175 amino acids. Numerous studies using synthetic PACAP-38 and PACAP-27 have been reported and the sequence of PACAP suggests that it is a new member of the secretin/glucagon/vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) family, with greatest similarity with VIP. Radioimmunoassays revealed the presence of PACAP-38 in tissues throughout the central nervous system, including the hypothalamus, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and posterior pituitary, and also in many peripheral tissues, including the gastrointestinal tract, lung, adrenal, testis, and ovary. 2 Previous studies have identified both PACAP-and VIP-binding sites in the Several recent studies have shown that VIP stimulates a variety of ovarian functions, including ov~ lation,~ production by glanulosa cells of progesterone and estr0gen, 6.~.'and production by theca cells of androgen.','Zhong
