Nine subjects excreted 11 to 150 mg β-amino-isobutyric acid in urine in 24 h. Some Orientals consistently excreted large amounts and that appeared to be a genetic trait. When the natural acid isomer was given by mouth to 3 subjects recoveries in urine ranged from 55 to 102%. The natural D-(-) isomer which is an intermediate of thymine catabolism was destroyed less readily than the L-(+) isomer and different enzyme systems were involved. A. Hepburn.
