Four types of preys were presented to workers of O. troglodytes: normal sized: Allognathotermes workers and Tenebrio molitor larvae (5-6 mm long); inert: Allognathotermes workers anaesthetized with CO2; small sized: Microtermes workers; large sized: T. molitor larvae (10-11 mm long). The most complete sequence includes the following phases: detection, localization, approach, antennal palpation, attack, lifting, stinging and transport. Only inert preys are always antennated, and they are never attacked nor lifted and stung. The small prey are generally stunned or killed during the attack; they are not lifted and stung, whereas the large prey, which struggle vigorously after the attack, nearly always are. The normal prey are lifted and stung only when the attack is insufficient to stun or kill them.
