A number of studies are presently underway at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory to evaluate the potential of high-energy charged-particle beams for use in radiotherapy. The scope of the ongoing studies is such that only a portion can be reviewed in the present paper. Emphasis is placed here on the results of those studies in which comparisons have been made between the beams of the available ions, i.e., carbon, neon and argon. Also, studies are stressed which have gathered data on the broad beams spread in depth, which are most interesting to the radiotherapist. After a survey is presented of the properties of relative biological effectiveness (RBE) and oxygen enhancement ratio (OER), some rather interesting and not altogether expected characteristics of these beams are discussed.
