1, 2 Infections of the lower respiratory tract occur more frequently in these than in normal children, and the infections result in hospital admissions for as many as one-third of patients with BPD under 1 year of age. 3 We have recently identified three children with severe BPD whose course was complicated by recurrent fever and pulmonary excacerbations, and who were noted to be hypogammaglobulinemic. This is a treatable disorder of host defense, which if unrecognized imposes an additional risk to these already compromised children.
