Based on the sea temperature of China Ocean Reanalysis (CORA) from 1986 to 2008, the depths of the upper limit of thermocline in the South China Sea are calculated by using three methods, and the seasonal variation characteristics of the thermocline are studied. Three methods for determining the depths of thermocline are compared in detail. The results show that the depths which are obtained by using different methods are different; the depth determined by the S-T method is the shallowest; the depth from the vertical grads method is shallower; and that from high gradient method is the deepest. The depth calculated by the S-T method is almost equal to that calculated by the vertical grads method in the deep water area (the water depth >200 m) and the results are quite satisfactory under various seasons. The S-T method and the high gradient method can accurately determine no thermocline area in the shallow water area (the water depth
