Two experiments examined the recall of sets of printed words that were phonetically, graphemically, or formationally similar by 32 deaf college students or recent graduates and by hearing controls. Compared with hearing Ss, deaf Ss recalled significantly fewer words when ordered recall of words was required, but not when free recall was required. Deaf Ss tended to use a speech-based code in probe recall for order, and the greater the reliance on a speech-based code, the more accurate the recall. Results are consistent with the hypothesis that a speech-based code facilitates the retention of order information.(41 ref)(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
