A series of analogs with the general structureN1-(substituted) pantothenamide has been prepared and studied in several microbiological systems. Certain of these derivatives were inhibitory to growth of lactic acid bacteria at concentrations as low as 6 μg/ml and toEscherichia coliat levels as low as 0.6 μg/ml. InLactobacillus arabinosusandPediococcus cerevisiaethe analogs were competitively reversed by pantothenic acid with inhibition indices between 30 and 300. Inhibition of growth by the analogs inE. coliis of particular interest since previous potential pantothenic acid antimetabolites have been relatively inactive for this microorganism.
