The diagnosis of gastritis depends on a spectrum of morphologic and topographic findings. These findings lead to patterns of disease recognition and have for the most part been well recognized. The findings are interpreted with consideration of the possible etiobogic factors to establish a clinical opinion with useful diagnostic and prognostic information. Most of the disagreements on the different types of gastni-tis are probably due to the semantics of reporting rather than to real differences of opinion on the biol-ogy of the disease. The discovery of Ht’Iicobactc’r pylon has completely changed many concepts about the cause of gastnitis. This organism has been found to be the major cause of nonautoimmune gastnitis. In addition, further in-vestigations of gastnitis after the discovery of H py-ion have led to the recognition of other distinctive forms of gastnitis(eg, reflux gastnitis, lymphocytic gastnitis).
