Electrified interfaces continue to play a central role in condensed-phase physical chemistry. The last couple of decades have seen enormous strides in our understanding of these interfaces at scales approaching the molecular and, for certain systems, the atomic. Over a similar period, there have also been significant developments in our understanding of the liquid–liquid interface. However, without the benefit of such high-resolution experimental probes of interfacial structure as scanning probe microscopy, other theoretical and experimental methods must be developed to build a framework to understand the structure and dynamics of this interface. This chapter assesses the recent advances in the understanding of the liquid–liquid interface, concentrating particularly on interfaces between immiscible electrolyte solutions.
