probabilities under HP are symmetric with respect to the center point in a square con tingency table. In Section 2 of this paper we shall introduce a new model such that both HS and H.P hold in a square contingency table. The model is called the double symmetry model. We shall give a theorem which decomposes the model into two models so that the degrees of freedom of the model is equal to the sum of the degrees of freedom for the decomposed models. Moreover, in Section 3 we give a goodness of fit test for the decomposed models and in Section 4 we deal with an example.
