A case is described in which direct communication between the peritoneal end of a continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) cannula and the right Fallopian tube was demonstrated radiographically using a water-soluble contrast agent. As far as the author is aware, this is the first report of the radiographic demonstration of such a communication. A 20-year-old woman had required both haemodialysis and CAPD for chronic renal failure due to systemic lupus erythematosus since August 1981 when a peritoneal dialysis cannula was inserted. This was used successfully from November 1981 for 10 months and was removed in September 1982 because of peritonitis. The patient was re-admitted to hospital in May 1983 with pulmonary oedema requiring haemodialysis and a new, Oreopoulos-type (Oreopoulos et al, 1979), peritoneal dialysis cannula was inserted. Numerous pelvic adhesions were noted at this operation. She subsequently reported retrograde menstruation via the cannula. Use of the cannula for CAPD was considere...
