LYCORINE, an alkaloid extracted from Amarillidaceae1,2, is a powerful inhibitor of growth in higher plants, algae and yeasts. At the very low concentration of 10−6M, lycorine inhibits cell division in higher plants, red algae and yeasts, and the cell cycle is arrested in the interphase stage3. No inhibition of cell division was observed inEscherichia coli(O. A., unpublished).
