This paper presents the new competences framework developed by the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) to assist practitioners in the UK to continually increase their existing knowledge, understanding and skills in order to reach the ultimate goal of safe, improved quality of care for patients through reduction in the burden of disease and avoidable illness caused by healthcare-associated infections. The importance of these competences for infection prevention and control practitioners, for whom are these competences for, and how are these linked to other frameworks are discussed. How can these competences be used, how they can be applied in workforce development and management, and how they are structured are described. Examples of career paths for IPC practitioners and examples of assessing oneself against the competences and planning learning are presented.
