Early studies suggest that both the immunoregulation by T lymphocytes (TL) and the interaction of polyclonal B cell activators resulted in this predominance of antibody producing cells. Others have found gingival TL to increase in numbers in gingivitis and periodontitis. Moreover, unlike other forms of periodontal disease, necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG) is primarily localized within the soft tissue with little osseous involvement. Previous investigations of NUG have shown disease activity to be associated with psychological stress and leukocyte dysfunction. The purpose of the article is to characterize lymphocyte activation and function in subjects presenting with NUG compared to age and race matched control subjects.
