A theory of the exchange interaction of a hole bound to an acceptor with a hole in an exciton is developed for a semiconductor or a semiconductor heterostructure. An expression is derived for the exchange interaction operator which describes not only processes with mutual reversal of the hole angular momenta, but also a process in which the angular momentum of one hole is reversed whereas the polarization of the other hole remains the same. The theory is used to analyze the scattering mechanisms of light with a reversal of the angular momentum of a hole at an acceptor observed in p-type GaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well structures. The relationship between the polarization properties and the ratio of the intensities of the Stokes and anti-Stokes components of the scattering is clarified
