3-Sulfinopropionic acid, the product of transamination and dehydrogenation of homohypotaurine (3-aminopropanesulfinic acid), was isolated as the barium salt from incubated extracts of Pseudomonas fluorescens. The sodium and barium salts of the same compound were chemically synthetized from acrylic acid and formaldehyde sulfoxylate with the intermediary formation of bis(2-carboxyethyl)sulfone. The identity of the compounds prepared either by enzymatic or by chemical synthesis has been demonstrated.
Some physicochemical properties of 3-sulfinopropionic acid are deseribed.
