The frequency difference limen measured in a 2 sine-tone frequency discrimination is considered smaller than that measured in a FM. A model of FM detection for low modulation frequencies is presented, within the framework of signal detection theory, which considers the observed difference between frequency discrimination and FM detection. The FM detection model predicts human psychometric functions for detection of FM with different modulation waveforms. FM detection with square, sine, trapezoid and triangle FM are in reasonable agreement with the model predictions.
