placed green painted rocks near the entrance to the driveways of forest homes that he believed he could protect in the case of a forest fire. He placed red rocks at the driveway en-trances to homes where lack of clear-ance, narrow or steep driveways, flam-mable construction, or other features made protection impossible or too hazardous for his firefighters. No protection would be given to these homes. When the homeowners found out what the colored rocks meant, the chief al-most lost his job--but he made his point.
