Methylmercury hydroxide was administered subcutaneously to pregnant and non-pregnant female rats at doses of 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg Hg/kg. Seven days later mercury concentrations in the brains of the adults and fetuses were measured. Mercury concentrations in the brain of the fetus were at least twice that of the pregnant rats. Increased brain concentrations of mercury in the fetus may explain reports of the greater susceptibility of the fetus to methylmercury poisoning.
