Myeloperoxidase mediated iodination was studied during phagocytosis of killed yeast cells and immune complexes and it was found that iodinated plasma proteins appeared in the extracellular fluid. The incubation medium obtained after removal of granulocytes and particles also catalyzed the iodination of plasma proteins when a hydrogen peroxide generating system consisting of glucose oxidase was included. The extracellular iodination seems to be due to the action of myeloperoxidase released during phagocytosis. Large particles such as killed yeast cells induced a larger release of iodinating capacity than the smaller E. coli.
