This paper summarizes the major ethical considerations in the conceptualization and measurement of the equity of access concept, presents national and community data on the most current profile of access in the United States, and discusses the implications of these conceptual and empirical issues. Changes in health care policy and the future of the “equity of access” objective in the US are also discussed.
