Amplification of weak signals was investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The theoretical analysis was carried out within the approximation of a predetermined pumping field with consideration for temporal structures of the interacting pulses (unsaturated regime). With a pumping pulse duration of the order of the lifetime of hyperacoustic phonons, the width of the output Stokes signal in the large-gain mode was shown to be less than that of the pumping pulse by only half. To achieve the maximum gain, the pumping pulse should be delayed with respect to the input Stokes pulse by a time interval of the order of the lifetime of hyperacoustic phonons. Energy gains ∼2 · 109were experimentally achieved with an input signal energy of the order of 10-11J.
