Plasma lipid peroxide [LP] levels of diabetic patients reportedly were significantly higher than those of control subjects and the levels in diabetics with angiopathy were markedly higher than those in diabetics without angiopathy. The LP levels of serum lipoprotein fractions of 31 diabetics with angiopathy and retinopathy (18), 25 of whom were poorly controlled (fasting blood sugar .gtoreq. 140 mg/dl), were examined in relation to some abnormal features of lipid metabolism. Serum LP levels of diabetics were significantly (P < 0.005) higher than those of normal subjects. The increase in LP levels in the sera of diabetics is due to that in the HDL [high density lipoprotein] fraction. The amounts of triglyceride, cholesterol and total lipids in diabetic serum are significantly higher than those in normal serum. The amounts of triglyceride in the HDL and low density lipoprotein fractions of diabetic serum were significantly higher than those in the same fractions of normal serum, reflecting abnormal lipid metabolism in diabetics. Most of the circulating HDL particles are the end products of lipoprotein metabolism, formed in the plasma and intercellular space of peripheral tissues partly through the interaction of precursors secreted from the liver and intestine with lipids of cell membranes. As the HDL particles may reflect the states of the membranes, the observed increase in LP levels in the HDL fraction should be emphasized in considering the membrane damage in diabetic patients.
