Phenotypic modulation is an important physiological property of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) that allows transition from the differentiated, contractile phenotype to the proliferative, migratory, and secretory phenotype. 1 This switch of the VSMC phenotype is an essential process of vascular remodeling and occurs during growth and development, as well as in response to vascular injury or disease. Although multiple signaling processes are involved, K+ channels have been implicated as critical players in VSMC proliferation and vascular remodeling. 2 Changes in the expression and function of K+ channels, such as KCa3. 1, Kv3. 4, and Kv1. 3, have been linked with VSMC proliferation in different experimental models. 3–5 In addition, blockade of K+ channels inhibits the proliferation of many cell types, including VSMCs. 6
