The Science and Technology Agency, Japan, has begun 'Earth Simulator Project' from the fiscal year of 1997, which tries to forecast various earth phenomena through the simulation of virtual earth placed in a supercomputer. GeoFEM challenges for long-term prediction of the activities of the plate and mantle near the Japanese islands through the modeling and calculation of the solid earth problems, including the dynamics and heat transfer inside the earth. In this paper, computational strategies employed in GeoFEM, its parallel/vector performances and computational results of practical engineering problems and solid earth problems, such as the contact of plates near the Japan island and the natural convection of rotating double sphere ( core dynamics ) are described. Among the computational strategies, the linear equation solver and its preconditioning are detailed. REPORT DATE September 28, 2001 TOTAL NO.
