Supercritical fluid chromatography has been found to be a valuable tool to fractionate high molecular weight compounds (1, 2). The applicability of this method for high resolution work has recently been enhanced by the development of partitioning substrates which are bonded to the solid support and, hence, are not dissolved in the moving phase (3). In this letter we wish to report the capability of this technique in the resolution of a commercially available “monodisperse” polystyrene. Besides the higher resolving power, analysis times are more than one order of magnitude shorter than for conventional gel permeation chromatography. Figure 1 shows a chromatogram obtained by this technique on a 600 nominal MW polystyrene. Eighteen clearly resolved peaks can be observed. This product, which was obtained commercially from Pressure Chemical Co., Pittsburgh, Pa., is supposedly a narrow chain length distribution oligomer prepared by anionic polymerization (4, 5). The manufacturer’s data sheet indicates a viscosity average an of 578 rt: 7% and
