Background: Inhibition of pulmonary surfactant by plasma-derived proteins is an important pathogenetic factor of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Inhalation of aerosolized surfactant may be suitable for early treatment of ARDS. However, requirement of a high dose is a drawback.
