The estimation of the net longwave radiation (NLW) at the surface is much further behind for two main reasons. First, it is more difficult to directly compute from satellite data and second, there are almost no data available for verification. It is important to start building a reliable statistical knowledge based on high quality surface measurements representative of a variety of conditions.
