The surface porosity in die stone casts poured from impressions taken in polyvinylsiloxane materials has been found in many clinical cases to be so severe as to render these casts useless. The causative agent has been identified by mass spectrometry as hydrogen gas released from the impression material. The clinical observations are now supported by experimentsin vitroto determine the quantity of hydrogen released per unit volume of the material. Results are given for a comprehensive range of addition-cured silicone impression materials at various times after mixing. From the findings it is suggested that the manufacturers' pouring times be regarded as minimum.
