InTrypanosoma(Trypanozoon)brucei, procyclins are the major surface glycoproteins in the insect stage. A functional analogue of one form of procyclin has been identified in insect forms ofT.(Nannomonas)congolense; this shares virtually no sequence homology with procyclin and has been named glutamic acid/alanine-rich protein (GARP). Previous results have indicated thatGARPis conserved inT. congolense, but not in the 2 other members of the subgenusNannomonas:T. simiaeandT. godfreyi. Genomic DNA was used as a template in the polymerase chain reaction to ascertain the extent ofGARPsequence conservation in the Savannah, Forest and Kilifi subgroups ofT. congolense. It was concluded thatGARPis well-conserved inT. congolense, but not in the whole of the subgenusNannomonas. This suggests that the characteristic midgut-proboscis development cycle of this subgenus in the insect vector is not dependent on GARP.
