The therapeutic benefit that accrues from combining hyperthermia with other cancer treatment modalities implies enhancement of tumor control but not of normal tissue damage. In experimental tumor models the interactions between heat and cytostatic drugs (Bertino et al. 1984) or irradiation (Mooibroek et al. 1984; Dewhirst et al. 1985) are well known. However, only a few studies have been performed in normal tissues (Hume et al. 1983; Law et al. 1985), especially in critical organs for defined treatment regimes.
