As part of a continuing investigation on the in-fluence of the metallic cation in organic reactions, we initiated a study of the effect of varying the alkali hydroxide on the rate of the benzilic acid re-arrangement. After our work had been in progress for some time, we came upon the excellent work of E. Pfeil andco-workers1 bearing on this same field.
