THE work which I would like to review here began about twenty years ago when Prof. I. H. Mills and I were collaborating on another problem. We noticed that fibrinogen was present in the fluid filling the blastocyst cavity (the yolk-sac) of the early rabbit embryo shortly after it had become implanted (Brambell and Mills 1947). It seemed that this fibrinogen must be of maternal origin, since it was present in the embryo before the circulation was established. With respect to its protein content this fluid resembled rather dilute blood-plasma and contained maternal circulating antibodies (Brambell et al. 1949).
