This chapter reviews various findings, made primarily by means of electron microscopy, on the “tubular” (membrane) systems and structural fibrils of mammalian cardiac muscle cells. The term “membrane systems,” as used herein, does not necessarily imply possession of cylindric structure by all parts of the so-called “transverse” (T)-tubules or the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), but instead implies solely that these structures are composed of membranes and possess some form of organization within each cell.
