Athlete's heart (AH) has certainly been one of the oldest, most interesting and stimulating topics in sports medical research. The effect of physical activity on cardiac size was first denionstrated when the hearts of wild animals were compared to those of similar domesticated ones (8, 99). As early as 1906 KUlbs constructed an electrical treadmill for dogs to train on and demonstrated cardiac hypertrophy as well as dilatation.
